Critical Assist®

Do you realize that prior to age 75, your risk of contracting a life-altering illness exceeds your risk of dying? Even so, contracting a life-altering illness is not something any of us like to think about. However, the reality is that it can happen to any one of us, and if it does, thanks to improvements in healthy living and medical science, there is a good chance you will recover and get on with your life.

According to the Canadian Cancer Society, approximately 45 per cent of Canadian women and 49 per cent of Canadian men will develop cancer during their lifetime, and an estimated 60 per cent of Canadians diagnosed with common cancer will survive at least five years. In addition, according to Health Canada and The Canadian Institute for Health Information, one in four Canadians will develop heart disease in their lifetime and approximately 89 percent of hospitalized heart attack patients survive.

Treating and coping with illness can often mean significant and unexpected costs. CUMIS Critical Assist® is designed to provide you with financial peace of mind so that you can focus on recovery and get started on rebuilding your lifestyle as soon as possible. It provides you with a lump sum cash benefit while you are living, if you happen to be diagnosed with one of the Covered Conditions or Early Assist Conditions defined in your contract.

What Would You Do if Your Child Were Diagnosed with a Critical Illness?

One of our biggest concerns as a parent is our child’s health and well-being. If your child were ever diagnosed with a serious illness, you’d want to be with them and do everything you could to comfort and care for them. Critical Assist® – Head Start from CUMIS Life helps provide financial peace of mind to parents of a child diagnosed with a Covered Condition, so they can focus on what matters most: being with their child and helping them get better while maintaining their family’s needs.

Facing the Financial Challenges of a Critical Illness

Is your family financially equipped for the potential cost of recovering from a critical illness? Consider the potential challenges of maintaining a lifestyle that you may no longer be able to afford:
  • Reduction or permanent loss of your income
  • Lost income of family members caring for you or your child

  • Insurance co-payments and deductibles
  • Convalescence or physiotherapy
  • Refitting your home and your car
  • Relocating to a more suitable locale or climate
  • Mortgage payments or a car loan
  • Childcare
  • Children's education
  • Retirement

Critical Illness Insurance may help by providing you with the financial support to:

  • Travel to get treatments that aren't available locally
  • Get treatments that aren't funded by your provincial health plan
