Our roots

Our story is your story. The CUNA Mutual Insurance Society, and its Canadian arm, CUMIS, was born out of a tragedy that highlighted the need for insurance protection for its operations. Known as the “Lesson of the Linesman,” the credit union member borrowed $250 just two days before his fatal accident. Two other linemen, cocreators of the loan, but loyal to their fallen colleague, repaid the debt from their own limited savings.
