CUMIS donates more than 400 boxes of apples in support of community programs
October 1, 2009 – Burlington, ON – On Tuesday, September 29, 26 local charitable organizations participated in The CUMIS Group Limited’s (CUMIS) 18th Annual Apple Day, picking more than 400 boxes of apples in support of a variety of community programs.
“Apple Day is a long-standing CUMIS tradition that allows us to give back to the community in a unique way,” says Kenn Lalonde, President and CEO, The CUMIS Group Limited. “The key to its success year after year is the passion and dedication of CUMIS employees, who truly believe in the importance of supporting the communities in which we live and do business.”
More than 50 CUMIS volunteers were on hand to help approximately 180 community guests gather various types of apples, destined for distribution at food banks, community meal kitchens, church pie sales and school nutrition programs.
“The apples picked by our group at this year’s Apple Day will help to feed 5,000 students at 15 schools,” says Gayle Cruikshank, Executive Director, Halton Food for Thought. “Having the opportunity to hand-pick fresh apples also aligns with our farm-to-school program.”
The CUMIS head office is built on 140 acres of property, including a 15-acre apple orchard that was planted in 1946. CUMIS uses licensed contractors to re-plant dozens of trees each year and to maintain the orchard with environmentally-safe products.
