Protecting homeowners from basement flooding

September 9, 2009 - The Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction (ICLR) recently released a new Handbook for Reducing Basement Flooding.

“I am pleased to have been involved in producing this valuable resource, which will provide concerned homeowners and municipalities with important information on reducing the risk of sewer backups and basement flooding,” says Carol Jardine, President and COO of CUMIS General Insurance Company, and Chair of the ICLR Insurance Advisory Committee.

Over the past 10 years, natural disasters have caused more than $1 trillion in damage worldwide, with the amount of damage doubling every five to seven years since the 1960s. Much of this damage is preventable, and the Handbook for Reducing Basement Flooding is part of an effort to help avoid unnecessary suffering through the creation of disaster-resilient homes.

“This handbook is particularly timely in our community given July’s heavy rainstorm and the impact to credit union members in Hamilton, Ontario” adds Carol. “It is the ICLR’s hope that with this information homeowners and municipalities are able to work together to reduce and eliminate the incidents of basement flooding across Canada.”
