CUMIS honours life of long-time credit union member

April 11, 2008 - Burlington, ON - CUMIS Life Insurance Company recently honoured the life of Margaret Reid, a credit union member for more than 60 years. Although Margaret, who passed away at the age 101, out-lived her CUMIS Life insurance policy by 31 years, CUMIS Life recognized this extraordinary situation by making a donation in her name to the charity of her family’s choice.

“When the Reid family contacted us, CUMIS Life was very pleased to honour Mrs. Reid’s memory by making a donation in her name,” says Gabe Kalmar, Senior Vice President, Life. “This donation celebrates Mrs. Reid’s life and her belief in the credit union system.”

Margaret’s participation in the co-operative movement began in Saskatchewan where she was a member of the former Co-operative Canadian Federation. When she moved to Vancouver in the 1940s, she joined Vancity credit union and remained a member until her recent passing.

Margaret’s daughter, Janet Wilson, recalls her mother’s involvement with co-operatives was a basic way of life. "Through the credit union, she was able to create a financial reality that allowed her to pursue her dreams,” she explained. “Leading by example, her demonstration of co-operative values made a significant impact on our family."
