CUMIS celebrates 70 years of serving credit unions

October 24, 2007 – The CUMIS Group Limited recently celebrated the 70th anniversary of the signing of its first Canadian loan protection contract, which was issued by CUNA Mutual Insurance Society to Dalhousie Industrial Credit Union in New Brunswick.
 
“This is a very special year for us, because it marks the beginning of what we know today as ‘CUMIS’,” said Kenn Lalonde, President and CEO, The CUMIS Group Limited. “While our organization’s corporate names and structures have changed and products and services have evolved since 1937, our founding vision of serving financial co-operatives has remained the same. It’s a time to celebrate our roots and recognize our strong and inherent ties to the credit union system.”

On hand for the celebration with employees at the CUMIS head office in Burlington, Ontario were Russ Fast, Chair of the CUMIS Board of Directors, and Kevin Murphy, General Manager, Dalhousie Industrial Credit Union.

“Over the years, CUMIS has had to change to reflect the demands of its customers, as well as to maintain its reputation as one of this country’s great insurance companies,” said Russ Fast. “Through it all, the one thing that hasn’t changed is the organization’s total commitment to helping credit unions succeed and to help protect credit union members.”

Kevin Murphy, to whom the organization presented a soapstone carving from Arctic Co-operatives Ltd. to mark the occasion, offered heartfelt comments about his credit union’s dealings with CUMIS.

“I’ve been amazed time and again at the way in which CUMIS keeps our members welfare at the forefront of their processes,” said Kevin Murphy. “CUMIS continues to be integral to our credit union’s success and a crucial benefit provider to our members.”
