CUMIS donates more than 500 boxes of apples to local charities
October 5, 2007 – More than 50 CUMIS employees displayed their commitment to the local community by helping to pick $18,000 worth of apples for local not-for-profit organizations. From 31 community groups, 258 volunteers spread across the CUMIS apple orchard to pick fruit for their various fundraising activities.
“As supporters of the co-operative system, we believe strongly in giving back to our community,” said Kenn Lalonde, president and CEO, The CUMIS Group Limited. “Apple Day is one of the many ways we’re able do that. It’s a privilege to be able to make use of our orchard in this way.”
The CUMIS head office is built on 140 acres of property, including an 11-acre apple orchard that was planted in 1946. Each year dozens of trees are re-planted and every winter the trees are pruned. Licensed contractors use the most environmentally-safe products available for spraying.
This year marks the 16th annual Apple Day and fourth year CUMIS has partnered with the United Way of Burlington and Greater Hamilton.
